Kingsbridge

At the head of the estuary, Kingsbridge is a bustling year-round market town with its own cinema, a local history museum and a well-established arts and yoga centre with café.

Take a ride on the Kingsbridge & District Light Railway – the kids will love it – or, heading out of town towards Dartmouth, why not pay a visit to Start Point Lighthouse, the only working lighthouse in Devon open to the public.

Dartmouth

Home to the Dartmouth Royal Naval College (public tours available), Dartmouth is steeped in maritime history and hosts many water-born events through the year. There are both pedestrian and vehicular ferries which give access to Kingswear and the National Trust’s Coleton Fishacre, one-time home of the D’Oyly Carte theatrical and operatic family, and Agatha Christie’s Greenway (also National Trust).

For family fun, head out to Woodlands Family Theme Park, the largest in Devon, or opt for an adults-only escape of lunch or dinner and drinks at the Dartmouth Golf & Country Club.

Totnes

Visit Totnes Castle (English Heritage) for panoramic views over the town or head out to Dartington Hall for a walk around the stunning Grade II listed grounds. Try a wine tasting and tour of Sharpham Vineyard or visit the imposing remains of Berry Pomeroy Castle (English Heritage) deep in the nearby South Hams countryside.

Back in town, after a spot of retail therapy, you could head down to the Quay and the River Dart to take advantage of the Round Robin tour linking Totnes with Dartmouth via a two-hour ferry journey, then across to Kingswear on the passenger ferry to board the Dartmouth Steam Railway to Paignton, returning back to base at Totnes via an open-topped bus. What better way to explore the River Dart and surrounding countryside?

Salcombe

Salcombe is one of the most exclusive and picturesque coastal towns and sailing destinations in the UK. A visit here is all about boating, beaches, browsing boutiques and generally soaking up the scenery and atmosphere of this superb location.

Hire a boat to explore the estuary, try your hand at making gin at the award-winning Salcombe Gin Distillery on Island Street, take the kids crabbing from Victoria Quay or head out to the tropical Gardens at Overbeck’s (National Trust) for a cream tea in the sunshine.
